What is the ‘Take a Breather’ Caregiver Recognition Program?

The Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation would like to share your inspiring story as a caregiver to help create a community of support for those affected by PF.

The Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (CPFF) announces the second ‘Take a Breather’ Caregiver Recognition Program, a unique program focused on recognizing the significant role of those who care for someone living with pulmonary fibrosis (PF). This program has been made possible through an educational grant from Hoffman-La Roche Limited.

The CPFF would like to acknowledge caregivers for their crucial role in improving the lives of those living with PF. Responding to the unexpected needs of those living with PF, these unsung heroes share in carrying the weight of this frustrating and debilitating disease. For this, the CPFF wants to give back and say thank you.

Do you have pulmonary fibrosis (PF), and wish to recognize someone special who has gone over and above in caring for you?

Nominated caregivers* for the ‘Take a Breather’ Caregiver Recognition Program will be entered into a random draw to receive a ‘Breather’* – a gift that lends assistance or provides respite for those who graciously put others before themselves.  With their consent, the selected caregivers will have their story shared on the CPFF website.

What is a ‘Breather’?

A ’Breather’ lends assistance or provides respite while recognizing the PF caregiver for their work — providing a small, yet meaningful bit of relief from everyday commitments, and is a way for the PF patient or loved one to recognize the dedication of the PF caregiver.  Some items for which caregivers could use use their ‘Breather‘ might be:

  • Prepared meals delivered to the home
  • Home cleaning service
  • Professional home maintenance
  • Dinner at a local restaurant with friends/family
  • A day of rest and relaxation at a local spa
  • Tickets to a local concert or live theatre show

*  A ‘Breather‘ is only awarded to a Canadian resident who is the primary caregiver of a PF patient as of August 1, 2014 and has not received a ‘Breather’ in the past. The randomly drawn caregiver must sign a release form to complete eligibility and will receive a CPFF cheque for $1,000.00 CDN.

When are the 2015 “Breather’ Recipients announced?

Nominations for 2015 closed on August 31st at 12 midnight.  CPFF will be contacting the recipients during August to obtained signed releases and the caregivers stories.  CPFF will announce the 2015 ‘Breather‘ Recipients during Lung Health Month (November) and afterwards, over the next few months, will share the caregiver stories and the stories of those who nominated them.
